Number Of Civil Partnerships In The UK Rises

Provisional figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that the number of civil partnerships in the UK has risen during 2011.
There were 6,795 civil partnerships in 2011, which is an increase of 6.4% compared with 2010. These provisional figures also show, however, that the number of civil partnership dissolutions granted rose to 672, an increase of 28.7%.
The take up of civil partnerships was fairly evenly split, with 50.7% being male couples.
Civil partnerships were introduced by the labour government in 2005 to give same sex couples the same legal rights as married couples, however, stopped short of introducing equal marriage.
