Macklemore

Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty is the US rapper behind the worldwide hit 'Thrift Shop'. He's also known for his support of gay equality.

In his song 'Same Love', he deals with issues of equality, especially attitudes towards homosexuality. The song's opening line is "when I was in the third grade I thought I was gay."

As Ben declares in the song, despite living up to some stereotypes like keeping his room tidy, he's not actually gay.  As his Mum supposedly put it according to the 'Same Love' lyrics, “Ben you've loved girls since before pre-k tripping.”

Macklemore, who works with Ryan Lewis, is a big supporter of gay rights, including same-sex marriage, the song also condemns homophobia in the music industry.

His support for the LGBT community doesn't stop there, he supported openly gay rapper Frank Ocean in the run up to the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Last week, Australian radio station 2Day FM asked listeners to join them in Sydney's gay district, Oxford Street to take part in marriage equality video set to Macklemore's 'Same Love'.
