Cate Blanchett

Academy Award winner set to play lead role in film version of lesbian classic ‘The Price of Salt’

The Australian actress is set to star alongside Mia Wazikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids are Alright) in a film version of Patricia Highsmith’s classic lesbian novel ‘The Price of Salt’. The film is due to be renamed Carol after the leader character in the novel.

The film producer Elizabeth Karlsen has said that this is a “heart-breaking, wonderful story that has you on the edge of your seat.”

The novel caused controversy when it was released in 1952 due to its obvious lesbian content and happy ending, which was uncommon in literature at the time.

The film is the latest in a growing acceptance of gay and lesbian stories in mainstream movies. It will start filming in February 2013, adapted by Phyllis Nagy and directed by John Crowley.
